How to Draw Cool Tattoos With Pen

x pen cartoon techniques and tips

When fatigued with knowledge, a great pen cartoon carries a certain evocative power that stems from the cleanliness of the finished piece of work. However, that same cleanliness tin likewise leave yous vulnerable because high contrast line drawings requite you lot nowhere to hide.

Every line in pen and ink communicates knowledge and power or timidity and uncertainty. It's a fine line betwixt i and the other, no pun intended. To help, here are some of my techniques for making pen and ink cartoon more approachable and less nerve-racking. Grab your all-time pens (see our Copic marker Black Friday post) and permit's get started.

This pen and ink video is a tribute to 1 of my favourite artists, Chuck Close. If this inspires you lot to educate yourself further, head over to Schoolism.com (opens in new tab) to detect courses (including two of mine!), workshops and more. It's an amazing way to report with the pros!

My pen, nibs, and ink

To describe in ink, you need a pen, nibs, and ink. I like using Higgins Black Magic ink (opens in new tab), which is waterproof when dry, so I can paint over information technology and the ink won't run. Remember to only pull or drag a bill to make marks; pushing will cause splatters and ruin your work. Likewise, a slight change in pressure will change the thickness of your lines. These are things you need to go used to at the outset.

02. Know your strokes

Different strokes for different folks

In a higher place are my favourite techniques for creating the illusion of gradations in value using high contrast blackness ink on white paper. Look at thick and thins. Nib pens are keen for this. Draw structures in shadows with thicker lines, and structures in light with thinner lines. Try information technology yourself: draw a circle, then get over the bottom of information technology with a heavier line and immediately it gains volume and looks like a ball.

03. Utilize a mixture of pens

Grab a pen, any pen

I like to use different pens for different things. I use thick markers for large shadows because they're large and chunky and cover a lot of paper quickly. I like Sharpies for smaller shadows and thick continuous lines. A blue writing pen might be skilful for clouds, waves, or anything that might wait cool in blue. Consider all characteristics of your pens, like colour, thickness, and so on. Be creative and stay alert for any pen that can make your work singled-out.

04. Hold your pen properly

Hold on loosely!

Just irresolute the way you lot concord your pen tin add an extra dimension to your pen and ink drawings and make them special and unique so that they stand up out from other artists. I similar to hold my pen at the back whenever possible because the looseness in my lines often present unexpected opportunities in my work. If your drawings are usually very tight and controlled, give this method a endeavour, you lot might surprise yourself with the wonderful accidents that can happen.

05. Just add water

Anarchistic "watercolour"

As you might tell from my previous tips, when working with ink, tones tin become a puzzle. I've talked about hatching and line weight, hither's a play a joke on that takes tones more literally: try rubbing a chip of h2o onto your fresh ink lines to create softer tones. In a compression, I would do this with saliva and my finger! Softer tones alongside ink lines create a wonderful contrast and volition brand your drawings a little more lifelike.

06. Utilize a Crow Quill

As the Crow Quill flies

The Crow Quill (opens in new tab) makes the thinnest lines I know of outside of a Rapidograph (opens in new tab). It has a scratchy experience and allows great accurateness. I use the Crow Quill when I want to practise a Rembrandt-esque drawing. All the same, because of the fineness of Crow Quill lines, this pen is really only suitable for smaller drawings; there are more efficient ways of doing a large drawing than with a Crow Quill. Once you're finished inking, do a launder to add dimension to your cartoon.

07. Don't forget to wash

Don't forget to wash

Ink launder is similar a hybrid inking and painting technique done with a brush instead of a pen. Value is controlled by your ink to water ratio – the more than ink or less h2o, the greater your value. Start with your brush dipped liberally in ink so it collects on your paper. Paint by pulling the ink puddle across the page. Re-dip your brush when needed, e'er keeping a puddle, and go along washing. Ink wash and watercolour techniques are like.

08. Use dry pens

Your pen can still have a life later death

Don't exist too quick to throw away your dried up pens! Pens on their final jiff tin deliver a very dry, almost castor-like stroke to your pen and ink drawings, which has a completely unlike wait from other tools. Also, by putting dry out pens away with the cap tightly fixed, you may resurrect them for a few more than minutes' utilize. Try information technology the side by side time your pen dies.

09. Sketch showtime

Drawing can salve your fears

The unforgiving permanence of ink can stress some people out. But recollect, just because you're making an ink drawing doesn't mean you take to employ ink all the way through. I'm a firm believer that art should be fun and stress-costless. So if launching direct into ink is too much pressure, try drawing your paradigm in pencil offset, then add ink over it. Either way works, just do what you lot're comfortable with to set up yourself upwards for the greatest joy.

10. Try to chill

Art should exist fun. Yous tin forget this when yous worry as well much about making mistakes or obsess over every line you draw and forget the joy of making art. Remember the bigger flick. Every journey every making is fraught with mistakes and missteps. That'due south okay; it's normal. Only remember that each line serves a greater whole and leads to your final epitome. If you make a mistake, chill out and movement on – it might not even exist noticeable in the end. Your lines Volition go better with fourth dimension so enjoy the journey.
